About this Event
A celebration of postgraduate research at the University of Birmingham.
The University Graduate School are working with a committee of postgraduate researchers (PGRs) to organise a Postgraduate Research Festival, 18 & 19 June 2024.
This is the biggest celebration of postgraduate research at the University of Birmingham, giving postgraduates from different disciplines the opportunity to share their work with the wider University and beyond.
This year, our Festival theme is Collaboration and Connection, exploring the ways in which postgraduate research can be a collaboration with external organisations, cultural institutions, communities, in interdisciplinary projects, in open research, and as colleagues and co-authors.
The Festival includes a packed programme with events open to staff, postgraduate taught students (PGTs), postgraduate researchers (PGR) and partners of the University interested in postgraduate research (a particular welcome to PGTs and UGs applying for/considering PG studies!).

All exhibitions and events will be located in the Teaching and Learning Building (R22 on the campus map) for the duration of the event, as well as being viewable online. Sign up as normal below and keep an eye on our Linktree for information about how to access it online.
PGT Essentials LIVE: Getting Started with your Dissertation (Open to PGTs)

How do I get started with my dissertation? In this special PGT Essentials, join the University Graduate School and the Academic Skills Centre for a discussion about all-things dissertation, including finding information, critical thinking, and writing, including a Q+A with our panellists.
Could You Be a UGS Scholar (PGR)? Information Session (Open to current or incoming PGRs)

Each year, the University Graduate Schools recruits ten postgraduate researchers (PGRs) across all five Colleges who can build up their postgraduate communities through a range of events, for a £2500 scholarship. As our applications for 2024-25 Scholarships open, join us for an overview of what Scholars do, how to apply, and get your questions answered.

Join us for our second Keynote Speech of the Postgraduate Research Festival 2024, Prof. Ruth Gilligan.
Our Keynote Speakers for 2024 are distinguished academics who have undertaken collaborative projects in their career. Prof. Ruth Gilligan, is a best-selling novelist, journalist, and Professor of Creative Writing at UoB, who has worked extensively with chartiable organisations. These include the global storytelling charity Narrative 4 , ‘story exchange’ projects across the UK, Ireland and US, and the National Literacy Trust.

This is the perfect opportunity to talk to our researchers about their current projects from departments across the University. From the Arts and Humanities to STEM subjects, this is your opportunity to see the dynamic research that is taking place at UoB, plus vote for your favourite in our People's Choice Awards.
Progressing to PGR Panel (Open to all)
2-3pm, Teaching and Learning Building, Room 211/212
Are you starting a research degree next year, or are thinking about doing one in the future? Join us for this panel with current Postgraduate Researchers, who will share their experiences of making the ‘step up’ to PGR study (from undergraduate, taught postgraduate, or time out of education) and what doing a PGR degree looks like, followed by a Q+A.
Research Perspectives (Open to all)
2-3pm, Teaching and Learning Building, Lecture Theatre 2 (102)
Research Perspectives celebrates and highlights the work being done by postgraduate researchers (PGRs) and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) at the University of Birmingham. Join speakers from all disciplines as they give short presentations on the impact collaboration has had on their research, such as by working with other international academics, charities, local councils, arts organisations, and across the globe.
UGS Awards Ceremony and Drinks Reception (Open to all)
3-5pm, Teaching and Learning Building, Lecture Theatre 1 & Lower Ground Floor Foyer
Please note that alcohol will be served at this event, with a range of non-alcoholic drinks available.
Join us for our awards ceremony, where we will announce the winners of the PGT Gallery and Research Poster Competition, The Michael K. O'Rourke Best Publication Awards, Awards for Excellence in Doctoral Research Supervision, PG Community Champion Award, Enquiring Minds Awards and our Three Minute Thesis People's Choice award. Join us to congratulate our winners, followed by a drinks reception in the Teaching and Learning Foyer, where you can peruse the work of our winners and speak to our spotlighted researchers.
