UNTUCKED presents BREAKFAST ON PLUTO

UNTUCKED is a new interactive comedy & film series that explores the narratives of transness and identity through film. Hosted by trans comedian Alice Rose, each installation of UNTUCKED will explore a different film, curated for its unique exploration of gender identity, for better or worse. From popular classics to deep cult favourites, from LGBTQ+ heroes to comedic faux-pas, UNTUCKED traces the history of gender exploration through the 20th Century’s most prolific and impactful medium. 

From director Neil Jordan (THE CRYING GAME, INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, GRETA) comes a delightfully misadventurous tale of a transgender woman’s quest for love and belonging. Set in the 1970’s, BREAKFAST ON PLUTO (2005) follows the orphaned Kitten (Cillian Murphy) from the church doorstep of her small Irish town to the bleak streets of London, England, in search of her mother - or anything that resembles one. 

While not perfect in its representation, BREAKFAST ON PLUTO stands out as a trans story so endearing and optimistic that it almost excuses its casting of a cisgender man to portray a transgender woman. Adapted from a much darker source material, the Patrick McCabe novel of the same name, the film depicts a young trans woman's violent encounters with a punk band, the London Police, and sex work as a colourful romp. Cillian Murphy's sincere and endearing treatment of the role honours her vulnerability in contrast to her unshakeable sense of self, creating a vibrant character who, as Roger Ebert wrote, “doesn't care if you think (she's) male or female, as long as you think (she's) Kitten.”
