Adapting his own 2012 hit novel Complètement cramé!, first-time film-maker Gilles Legardinier’s delightful dramedy is highly likely to be this year’s Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.John Malkovich plays a recently widowed and burnt-out business leader whose pilgrimage back to the place where he met his late wife lands him an unexpected new role as a butler.

As with Mrs. Harris, it’s that there’s substance behind the crowdpleasing swagger and style that means Mr. Blake leaves a mark. There are crises to be overcome, hard edges to be blunted and tough conversations to be had, as both the visitor and the inhabitants of Domaine de Beauvilier have much to learn from one another.
