UNSAID
About this Event
‘I’ve learnt to value failed conversations, missed connections, confusions. What remains is what’s unsaid, what’s underneath, understanding on another level of being.’ - Anna Kamienska
Unsaid is an independent dance production exploring themes related to life with dementia. The production explores themes of love and loss, the liminal nature of memory, the search for identity and meaning when one is faced with memory loss, and how the relationship between loved ones changes as a result. The role of memory keeper oscillates constantly, till the memories eventually find a new home. The production seeks to show that despite the changes, confusion and challenges, love is still present and felt in deep and different ways.
Unsaid is inspired by the creator’s experiences as a medical speech therapist having interacted with persons with dementia and their caregivers, as well as her relationship with her own grandmother who passed away from Alzheimer’s many years ago. It also takes inspiration from the play written by renowned Singaporean theatre practitioner Kuo Pao Kun’s 'Silly Little Girl and the Funny Old Tree'.
Unsaid is presented as part of a larger initiative Unsaid Stories, which is a dementia movement that uses various forms of art to advocate for the dementia community.
As part of this initiative, community engagement activities at various levels were conducted in the lead up to Unsaid, such as movement and wellness workshops and informative talks with various community groups in collaboration with Sukhaalayam, our workshop partner, and a film screening in collaboration with SIFAS Productions Limited.
Unsaid Stories is supported by the the Arts Fund, Dementia Singapore, the National Arts Council and SIFAS Production Limited.
