UNPACKING POSTURE
FRONT & BACK in harmony, for effortless posture
International Feldenkrais Awareness Week 2026
Improve your posture and balance, move with more comfort, ease, and power, free your breathing, and feel better.
Special price – Suggested donation £10 per session on Saturday 9 May.
The May-July workshop series will explore the theme of POSTURE, which is the theme of this year’s International Feldenkrais Awareness Week (IFW) 6-13 May.
There will be two consecutive sessions on 9 May (11.30-13.00 and 13.00-14.30).
My co-host Ram Yajnik, a fellow Feldenkrais practitioner, will make an introduction to the Feldenkrais Method at the start of each session. I will then teach an Awareness Through Movement lesson.
Many people say they want to ‘improve their posture’ but struggle to achieve and maintain this version of themselves. The IFW week of events aims to unpack the many moving parts that can take people from effortful straightness to easy uprightness.
The May sessions will be unpacking a reciprocal relationship between flexor and extensor group of muscles, a lifelong relationship to balance.
Flexor muscles contract to enable us to bend, and curl up (at the same time, in a well organised action, the extensor muscles disengage and lengthen). Extensor muscles – termed ‘anti-gravity’ muscles by Dr Feldenkrais – contract to straighten ourselves and keep us upright (and the flexor muscles disengage and lengthen.)
When this dynamic reciprocal relationship is not well organised, and most of us experience some version of it, co-contraction of front and back can impede our functional movement and make it effortful. Co-contraction interferes with the fundamental human functions of transferring of weight through the skeleton and the effective mobilisation of the anti-gravity function.
By engaging with movement in an attentive, mindful way, you will discover new possibilities for yourself and learn to use yourself more effectively, with more ease, elegance, skill and power.
Closely related to the June, July, and April workshops, all working together towards improving your skeletal support and the overall organisation when upright. Whilst each workshop can be experienced independently, in order to maximise the benefits, I recommend attending as many as you can.
International Feldenkrais Awareness Week (IFW) 6-13 May celebrates the birthday of Dr Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984). With his immense body of invaluable work, he anticipated nearly all the current research on neuroplasticity by demonstrating that we can change, learn and develop across our entire life span.
Enjoy the process of learning through movement. Engage the inherent neuroplasticity of your brain. Improve your whole self.
Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lessons consist of a series of gentle, ingenious movements, verbally directed and exploratory in nature. There are hundreds of lessons which focus on different themes and interconnections between the nervous system, the muscles, the skeletal system, and our responses to the world around us.
Each month we focus on a different theme keeping us engaged in building a clearer image of ourselves, by paying attention to our sensations as we move. Broadly beneficial and appropriate for people of all ages, interests and abilities.
Book your place for a 1.5 hour long Feldenkrais session and start enjoying the benefits.
Wear comfortable layered clothing. Please bring your own floor mat to lie on if you can (some mats will be provided if you do not bring yours).
Special price – Suggested donation £10 per session on Saturday 9 May.
