About this Event
SNL is known for its often edgy, topical humor. Over four decades, this staple of network television has never shied away from pushing boundaries and creating controversy. Dave Chappelle is a legendary talent cut from a similar comedic cloth. During a recent SNL monologue, Chappelle entered the highly charged national debate around anti-Semitism reignited by reactions to Kanye West and Kyrie Irving in the media. The monologue used humor to share a valid Black perspective on the strife and its aftermath, while at the same time promoting harmful tropes about Jewish power. True to form, Dave threaded a narrow needle and provoked thoughtful discussion. However, the message of the monologue was received quite differently within Black and Jewish communities. The very question "Why?" creates an important opportunity for dialogue and deeper understanding between friends.
The National Black Empowerment Council, along with UJA Federation of New York and the Anti-Defamation League, cordially invite you to join us as we take a new approach to foundational conversations that strengthen the Black and Jewish alliance. Starting from a premise of trust and friendship, we aim to create a space for thoughtful leaders to engage in authentic discussions on critical issues, civil society, and collaborative leadership and empowerment initiatives.
Unpacking Dave Chappelle's monologue is just the opening of what we hope will be many productive and meaningful conversations.
