About this Event

IDSA is thrilled to announce a panel discussion about Universal Design, bringing together trailblazing experts from fashion and beauty, tech, home, healthcare, and more who have reshaped their industries by integrating Universal Design, Disability Inclusion, and DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) into their work.

1 in 4 Americans live with a disability, yet most products, spaces, and services are still not designed with them in mind. The reality is that we all encounter situations where products and experiences are mismatched with our abilities. Forward-thinking businesses that recognize this gap and embrace disability inclusion are not just leading with empathy—they are tapping into an opportunity to drive innovation, gain a competitive advantage, and create solutions that work better for everyone.

Smart Design's groundbreaking work with OXO Good Grips transformed Universal Design in the 90s into a competitive advantage and a $500M category-leading business. This revolution continues today across industries, with Michael Graves + Pottery Barn creating stylish universal furniture lines and Victoria's Secret launching an inclusive lingerie collection that celebrates bodies of all abilities. Designers are rethinking the social impact of their products, leveraging advancements in materials science, manufacturing, affordable sensors, motors, and lean-AI models to create experiences that dynamically adapt and enhance our abilities.

Panelists:

  • Rob Van Varick, Chief Design Officer at Michael Graves Design
  • Mindy Scheier (Runways of Dreams)
  • Richard Whitehall, Executive Director and Partner at Smart Design
  • Anders Berggreen (byAcre)

Moderator: Estela Lugo (Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation)

Why Attend?

  • Learn from practitioners who have successfully embedded accessibility into their business models
  • Understand both the social and economic benefits of designing for all
  • Discover how Universal Design can help you reach new markets and build customer loyalty
  • Connect with others who are working to make inclusion a standard part of good design

The future of design is inclusive, practical, and accessible, with thoughtful technology integration enhancing these qualities.

Join us at NYCxDesign Week to be part of this important conversation!
