About this Event

The exhibition presents an exclusive preview of the UNESCO Italy. Photographs project: photographs aimed at enhancing the incomparable Italian cultural and natural heritage through contemporary artistic languages.

The project is the result of the collaboration between the Italian Ministry of Culture (Ufficio UNESCO del Segretariato Generale and Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione in Rome - ICCD) and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Direzione Generale per la Diplomazia Pubblica e Culturale – Ufficio III).

The UNESCO collection, as a whole, is comprised of 220 photographic prints depicting the 58 Italian sites included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. All the images have been captured by the most significant authors in the Italian photography scene, from the best-known masters of black and white, to established middle career authors, to young emerging talents. After being exhibited in various international venues since 2006, the collection was acquired by ICCD, the Institute of the Italian Ministry of Culture which maintains the largest public collection of photographs in Italy.

For this premiere, a series of unpublished prints and new photographic commissions have been selected to represent the Italian sites most recently added to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The collection in its entirety can be enjoyed through a video production created for the occasion which bears witness to the richness of representations that the project has been able to generate, offering new avenues to experience our cultural heritage. After the opening in Washington, DC, the exhibition continues its tour in other international venues.
