Unearthing the Science of Soil in the Sonoran Desert (Nonprofits/Providers)

Discover the hidden science beneath our feet in this 3-hour professional development workshop. Designed for primary educators and STEM teachers, this session takes a hands-on approach to exploring the fascinating properties of soil in the American Southwest. Using the 5E Model of Inquiry, we’ll dig deeper into questions like: What is our soil made of? How did it form? How can understanding it help us thrive in the Sonoran Desert? Together, we’ll examine the connection between scientific exploration and the cultural history of our region, including indigenous uses of soil and the significance of ancient canal systems.

Participants will work in small groups to investigate and experiment, coming together at intervals for whole-group discussions.
