This is the second talk of the Spring semester's Astronomy Public Lecture Series. The lecture will begin at 7:00p in Steigerwald Hall, and will be followed by observations at the TMU Observatory (weather permitting). Free and open to the public -- no RSVP necessary.
Astronomers often discuss distances in lightyears, the distance light travels in a year. In fact, one lightyear is a whopping six trillion miles or so, or about ten-thousand-trillion yards. That’s one followed by 16 zeroes! What do such large numbers even mean and how can we get a more intuitive feel for the immensity of the universe? In this talk, we will put cosmic scales into more “down-to-Earth” terms.
