Long before the rise of the Olympian gods, a mysterious female divinity appeared in the art of Bronze Age Akrotiri, an ancient city on the island of Thera, modern-day Santorini that was preserved beneath volcanic ash.
This lecture explores the remarkable artworks uncovered in the ruins of Akrotiri, where vibrant paintings depict a goddess and what appears to be a female-focused ritual.
Because the language of this civilization has never been decoded, much of what we know has to come from the images they left behind. Through the symbols, figures and clues hidden within 3,500-year-old art, we'll explore what these paintings can tell us about women, ritual, religion and the feminine divine in the ancient Aegean.
You'll leave with a deeper understanding of an ancient world we still can't fully decipher and the mystery of the goddess at its centre.
Kathryn Gendron (she/her) has a BA in Greek and Roman Studies with a minor in Human Rights and Social Justice and an MA candidate at the University of Ottawa. Her research is informed by both of these academic perspectives and focuses on gender, sexuality, and religion throughout the ancient world particularly identities that are subversive in nature. She is passionate about finding ways to connect these concepts to the modern world and engage with wider audiences as the history of ancient people repeats itself even today.
