Join Us for a Thought-Provoking Event: Socialization of Othering – The 4I's of Socialization

Discover how othering—the process of marking individuals or groups as different or less important—permeates through four layers of socialization: Individual, Interpersonal, Institutional, and Ideological. This event will explore how these layers interact to perpetuate social exclusion and inequality. Learn how personal beliefs, daily interactions, systems, and cultural ideologies contribute to this cycle and what can be done to challenge and change it.

Join us as we peel back the layers and work toward greater awareness and equity through engaging discussions, personal reflections, and expert insights. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how othering impacts both individuals and communities. This session continues our ongoing exploration of bias, stereotyping, and social justice. In a world that often thrives on division, our next series delves into the phenomenon of "Othering" and its profound effects on individuals and communities.

1. Collective Impact: Discover how the act of "Othering" affects everyone. Understand that when we marginalize others—whether it's due to poverty, mental health, race, GLBTQ, or any identity—we are, in fact, diminishing our own humanity.

2. Shared Experiences: Learn about the commonalities among those who are othered, from women and introverts to various marginalized groups. Reflect on personal experiences of being othered and how it impacts your sense of self.

3. Intersectionality: Delve into the interconnectedness of oppression. Understand that the struggles faced by different groups are often intertwined and exacerbated by overlapping social identities and systems of oppression.

4. Historical and Social Context: Explore the historical roots of othering, including colonization, concept of race, and the four roles of socialization: individual, interpersonal, institution, ideological. Examine how fear of difference and ingrained societal norms perpetuate othering and justify harmful treatment of marginalized groups.

5. Intent vs. Impact: Engage in discussions about the difference between intent and impact. Recognize how well-meaning actions can still perpetuate bias and stereotypes, causing unintended harm.

6. Specific Groups and Issues: Focus on the unique experiences of various groups who are often marginalized and othered in society. By examining these specific groups and issues, we aim to highlight the diverse and nuanced ways in which othering manifests and impacts individuals differently.

7. Emotional and Psychological Effects: Examine the mental and emotional toll of microaggressions and everyday biases. Understand how these seemingly small acts contribute to a larger pattern of discrimination and marginalization.

8. Contribution to Poverty: Understand how othering perpetuates poverty. Marginalized groups often face systemic barriers to education, employment, and economic opportunities. By excluding certain groups from resources and opportunities, society deepens economic divides and perpetuates cycles of poverty.
