About this Event

Understanding Later Life Care

A workshop from Stockport Advocacy

Supporting an older parent, relative or someone close to you can raise questions you've never had to think about before.

Where do you start? What are their rights? Who makes decisions? What support is available?

Understanding Later Life Care is a plain-English workshop from Stockport Advocacy, designed to make sense of these questions - whether you're planning ahead, in the middle of it now, or supporting someone else through it.

About the session

Drawing on our experience of advocacy and helping people understand their rights, this session covers the practical things worth knowing when navigating later life care - including mental capacity, Lasting Power of Attorney, Care Act assessments, and how advocacy can help when things get difficult.

It's a plain-English introduction, not a legal training session; you don't need any previous knowledge of advocacy or the care system to attend.

Who it's for

Anyone who may find themselves supporting a parent, relative, friend or someone close to them, now or in the future.

What you'll take away

  • How to approach capacity - and why a diagnosis doesn't automatically mean someone can't decide for themselves.
  • Why setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney early matters, and where to start.
  • How to ask for a Care Needs Assessment, and what to expect.
  • What advocacy is, and when it can help.
  • You don't have to work this out alone.

By the end of the session, you'll feel more confident speaking up for someone else's rights, whether that's in a meeting, an assessment, or simply knowing what to ask for.

What people have told us

"I wish this had been available to me last year - it would have made supporting my parents-in-law so much easier."

People who've attended similar sessions have said it gave them real clarity and confidence going forward.

Your booking also includes

A follow-up drop-in surgery from 5.30pm - 7.30pm the following Tuesday, where you can bring your own questions and get one-to-one support.
