Understanding Exposure explores how photographers use light to shape an image rather than simply record a scene. Every photograph is a series of creative decisions, and the camera is only a tool for making those choices.

This class examines the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, showing how each affects depth of field, motion, brightness, mood, and image quality. Rather than treating exposure as a collection of formulas to memorize, you'll learn why different settings create different visual results and when each choice serves the photograph you're trying to make.

By the end of the class, you'll have a stronger understanding of how exposure influences the look and feel of an image, giving you the confidence to move beyond automatic settings and intentionally create photographs that match your artistic vision.

What camera can I bring?

Any digital mirrorless, D-SLR, or bridge camera is welcome. Film cameras, tablets, and smartphones are not covered in this class.

My camera is about ten years old, and I haven't used it in a while. Will this class help?

Yes, to a point. The fundamentals of exposure haven't changed, but older cameras often lack features found on newer systems that may be discussed during class. If you're looking for instruction tailored specifically to an older camera, a private lesson is usually the better option.

What camera brands are covered?

The concepts taught in class apply to almost every modern camera system. Johnson PhotoImaging carries Canon, Nikon, OM System (Olympus), Panasonic, and Sony, so those models are the examples you'll see most often during the class.

Can my spouse or significant other attend with me?

Absolutely. Two people may attend together as long as you're sharing the same camera. One camera per couple.

I own more than one camera. Can I bring them all?

Please bring only the camera you use most often. The class focuses on photographic concepts rather than every menu option on every model. If you'd like to learn multiple camera systems, a private lesson is the best choice.

Do I need to know how to use Manual mode?

No. This class explains why aperture, shutter speed, and ISO affect your photographs and when to use them. Whether you normally shoot in Auto, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, or Manual, you'll leave with a better understanding of how exposure shapes an image.
