Session 1: Understanding Trauma Through an Autism Lens
Building a shared understanding of trauma, stress, and nervous system responses in autistic children.
The group will focus on:
- Understanding what trauma is, including how repeated stress, misunderstanding, sensory overload, and difficult life experiences can affect autistic children differently.
- Exploring the connection between behaviour, regulation, and the nervous system, recognising that behaviours are forms of communication rather than intentional defiance.
- Reflecting on personal parenting experiences within a supportive group, identifying strengths and sharing common challenges with other parents.
Session 2: Co-Regulation and Creating Emotional Safety
Developing practical trauma-informed parenting strategies that promote emotional safety and regulation.
The group will focus on:
- Learning co-regulation strategies that help children feel safe, understood, and supported during moments of distress.
- Identifying environmental, sensory, and emotional triggers while exploring ways to reduce stress and increase predictability at home.
- Sharing practical ideas with other parents for responding with curiosity, compassion, and connection rather than punishment or control.
Session 3: Caring for Ourselves While Supporting Our Children
Recognising the impact of parenting stress and building resilience for both parents and children.
The group will focus on:
- Understanding how parental stress, burnout, and emotional wellbeing influence family relationships and children's regulation.
- Developing realistic self-care and self-compassion strategies that support sustainable parenting without guilt.
- Reflecting on learning from the programme, celebrating strengths, sharing helpful resources, and identifying next steps for ongoing support and connection with other parents
The support group is only available to people who can attend all three sessions; you will not be able to join halfway through the course.
