Behind Closed Doors: Understanding, Assessing, and Responding to Domestic Violence with Compassion and Competence
· Understand domestic violence as a pattern of power, control, coercion, and safety risk, rather than “relationship conflict” or anger management.
· Identify common survivor presentations, including anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, dissociation, shame, sleep disruption, and barriers to care.
· Recognize common perpetrator presentations, including minimization, blame shifting, entitlement, jealousy, coercive control, and control framed as “concern.”
· Explore how domestic violence impacts mental health, healthcare access, family systems, and treatment priorities.
· Learn trauma-informed screening and assessment language clinicians can use in session.
· Review practical considerations for documentation, mandated reporting, safety planning, warm handoffs, and resource delivery.
· Discuss culturally responsive assessment and how identity, community, immigration status, religion, and stigma may impact disclosure and safety planning.
· Apply concepts through case examples, guided reflection, and practical clinical tools.
