"The Underscore is a long-form dance improvisation structure developed by Nancy Stark Smith. It has been evolving since 1990 and is practiced all over the globe. The Underscore is a vehicle for incorporating Contact Improvisation (CI) into a broader arena of improvisational dance practice; for developing greater ease dancing in spherical space—alone and with others; and for integrating kinesthetic and compositional concerns while improvising. It allows for a full spectrum of energetic and physical expressions, embodying a range of forms and changing states. Its practice is familiar yet unpredictable."

About this series:
Though the Underscore has its roots in Contact Improvisation, this space welcomes all dancers & movement enthusiasts, no CI experience required (though it does offer a useful entry point!) Each session will be broken down as follows:
1:30-2:30pm Talk-Through
2:30-5:30pm Underscore
The Talk-Through is a required element for anyone who has not previously participated in an Underscore. It'll provide a map for the journey we'll embark on together. Talk-throughs will either be in the Railyard Park or a nearby coffee shop (make sure to register so you can find out the exact location!) Please arrive promptly as we'll commence right at 1:30.
The Underscore itself will begin with settling into the space, circling up and setting intentions, and then diving into the non-verbal movement-centered portion of our practice. We'll emerge 1 to 2 hours later, take some time to individually reflect on our experience, and then gather as a group once more, to share our harvests collectively. The Underscore is a closed container; entering in means staying until completion of the score.

BIO~ Casey is a visual artist, performer, experience creator, facilitator, former professional dancer, and art gallery manager. She has been practicing contact improvisation recreationally since 2011 and was first introduced to the Underscore in 2014. She loves the Underscore for its gentle yet solid containment, vast exploratory potential, centering of the body and movement, community building byproduct, and unwavering weirdness.
