Join us for an engaging talk on Singapore's evolving terrestrial and maritime archaeological landscape, organised by the Heritage Conservation Centre. This session will feature leading experts who explore the rich archaeological heritage of Singapore, highlight recent discoveries and discuss challenges within the field. Attendees will gain insights into the vital connection between archaeology and conservation, particularly in post-excavation care and retention.
The session will conclude with a Q&A panel moderated by Michael Ng, Assistant Curator (Maritime Archaeology) of the Asian Civilisations Museum.

Situating Singapore in the Archaeology of Southeast Asia: An Account of Four Sites by Professor John Miksic
Professor John Miksic is a pioneering archaeologist with over five decades of experience in Southeast Asia. Former Peace Corps volunteer turned academic, he's a leading expert on Singapore's archaeology. Senior Research Fellow at Nanyang Technological University and Emeritus Professor at NUS, he specializes in archaeology of Southeast Asian trade and settlement patterns, and conducts research across Indonesia, Cambodia, and Myanmar while mentoring the next generation of archaeologists through extensive fieldwork opportunities.
Four Decades of Terrestrial Archaeology in Singapore by Dr Goh Geok Yian
Associate Professor of History and Associate Chair (Faculty) at School of Humanities, Nanyang Technological University, Dr Goh Geok Yian specialises in archaeology and history of Southeast Asian urbanisation and ceramics. She translates Burmese premodern historical and contemporary literature, and published works on Buddhist kingship in Myanmar, hell in Burmese murals, urbanization, and co-authored Ancient Southeast Asia with John Miksic.
Conservation Challenges: The Shah Muncher Shipwreck (1796) by Dr Michael Flecker
Dr Michael Flecker is a maritime archaeologist with a PhD from NUS and extensive experience in Southeast Asian shipwreck excavations. Currently with HeritageSG, he has directed numerous underwater archaeological projects across Asia. Dr Flecker's expertise spans ancient trade routes, shipbuilding technology, and cultural interactions evidenced by maritime artefacts.
Archaeology and Conservation in Singapore: A Reciprocal Relationship by Dr Franca Cole
Dr Franca Cole, archaeologist and conservator with a PhD from Cambridge, is a leading expert in archaeological conservation and collections management. Currently consulting for Sarawak Museum and lecturing at Nanyang Technological University, she brings extensive international experience to her work. Dr Cole specializes in sustainable conservation approaches for extreme climates, bridging academic research with practical museum applications.
