About this Event
More than a century ago "" became Devon’s most famous song, but this ballad has had an unsuspecting and surprising history. This celebratory lecture, which will include renditions of some Victorian variants, will chronicle the ways in which it was embedded into society and explain how it generated the well-known phrase through some unlikely individuals such as Albert Einstein, Karl Marx and Joan Collins.
Entertaining and informative, this event will be the perfect end to the society’s 2024 lecture series. Our speaker, Dr Todd Gray, is a renowned scholar of Devon's history and wrote a book about the roots of this famous song.
If you are a member of the Exeter Local History Society, tickets are free for you - please select a £0 ticket when registering for the event. If you are not a member of the Society, there is a small (£5) entry fee. If you would like to attend as a non-member, please select a non-member ticket when registering.
More information about the Society and its events can be found on the Society's website at www.exeterlocalhistorysociety.co.uk.
