About this Event

Join us to experience the powerful story of unBlocked Englewood, a groundbreaking documentary showcasing artist and activist Tonika Johnson’s latest project aimed at addressing the personal and systemic impact of Chicago’s segregation.

Building upon her acclaimed Folded Map Project, unBlocked Englewood focuses on revitalizing the 6500 block of South Aberdeen in Englewood—a neighborhood deeply impacted by discriminatory housing practices that deprived Chicago’s Black community of billions in wealth. This bold initiative is about much more than revitalizing homes: It’s a pathway to restoring dignity, stability, and economic justice in communities long neglected by systemic disinvestment.

At the heart of unBlocked Englewood is the story of the Walls family, whose resilience symbolizes the strength of Englewood’s Black community. This project, led by Tonika Johnson, offers a blueprint for narrowing the racial wealth gap by preserving family legacies, stabilizing Black homeownership, and fostering community pride. As Tonika invites us to imagine a different future, she demonstrates how art can be a force for reparative justice and societal healing.

The premiere will be hosted by Xavier Ramey, founder and CEO of Justice Informed, and poet, activist, and author Leslé Honoré. The program will include a screening of the unBlocked Englewood documentary followed by a panel discussion featuring influential voices in community development and equity:

  • Stephanie Coleman, 16th Ward Alderperson
  • Robin Rue Simmons, reparations activist
  • Tonika Johnson, social justice artist
  • Candace Moore, Chicago’s first Office of Equity and Racial Justice Commissioner
  • Erin Harkey, Former Commissioner of DCASE (Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events)

These leaders will share their insights on the project’s impact, the importance of equitable development, and the ongoing journey toward justice and restoration in Englewood.
