About this Event
Intended to help emerging artists expand and grow their practice, participants in this free workshop series will engage in group critiques of each other's work, one-on-one conversations with the instructors, and ample time in the studio to develop an experimental piece. The two-week workshop will also explore the practice of artists making unapologetic work, focusing on artwork that makes bold social statements, reflects authenticity, and centers the depth of personal experience. The instructors will encourage participants to assert themselves and their own experiences, exploring boldness, fieriness, contentiousness, daringness, and gutsiness as a means and a method in studio practice.
The workshop will meet on June 7, 9, 13, 15, and 16 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Fleisher. Registering for the June 7 session serves as registration for the series; please register only if you're able to commit to the two-week schedule.
Instructor Bios
Caff Adeus
Born in Chester PA, Caff Adeus is a Philadelphia based artist with a diverse body of work ranging from paintings, photography, mixed media installations, and performance art. Within this, Adeus’ wry, antagonistic approach is largely a tale of navigating multiple Americas and different class systems whilst attempting to normalize his own mortality. www.cvffvdeus.com
Emilio Maldonado
Emilio Maldonado is an Afro-Caribbean artist living in Philadelphia. He graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design (MFA, Painting, 2013), Escuela de Artes Plasticas de Puerto Rico (BFA, Painting, 2011) and from Altos de Chavon in the Dominican Republic (AAS, Fine Arts and Illustration, 2007).
Through a multidisciplinary practice, Maldonado explores questions that live between the realm of the domestic and the social-contemporary, dealing with culture, poverty and trauma and with a very keen interest in the human condition. He has been part of group and solo shows locally and abroad, including Make/shift at Vox Populi (Philadelphia, PA, 2021) and the Santo Domingo Museum of Modern Art Biennial (Santo Domingo, DR, 2013). He has also attended residencies at Elsewhere (Greensboro, NC) and Tiger Strikes Asteroid in 2020 and is a 2021 Mural Arts Fellow. www.emiliomaldonado.com
