About this Event
The theme of the United Nations Association in Canada (UNAC) Hamilton Branch’s Annual Peace Luncheon of 2026 is “Bridging Differences, Rediscovering Solidarity”. This theme is linked to Manifesto 2000 and its 2025 re-launch.
Background:
“Manifesto 2000” was drafted by Nobel Peace Prize Laureates as part of the UN International Year for the Culture of Peace, and signed by over 75 million people. Among the six ‘simple rules for a better society’ in the Manifesto is “Rediscover Solidarity,” in which we are each challenged to “contribute to the development of my community, with the full participation of women and respect for democratic principles, in order to create together new forms of solidarity.”
As defined by the UN, a culture of peace consists of “values, attitudes and behaviours that reflect and inspire social interaction and sharing based on the principles of freedom, justice and democracy, all human rights, tolerance and solidarity, that reject violence and endeavour to prevent conflicts by tackling their root causes to solve problems through dialogue and negotiation and that guarantee the full exercise of all rights and the means to participate fully in the development process of their society."
Today, as global crises persist and intensify—from war and militarization to climate change and inequality—the project calls for a renewed and unified effort to build a culture of peace. This renewed Peace Manifesto, aimed at youth in particular, is the result of global collaboration among educators, peace activists, and civil society organizations. It emphasizes the importance of nonviolence, human rights, sustainable development, gender equality, intercultural dialogue, and democratic participation.
Our Program:
We are asking representatives of various Hamilton groups and organizations concerned with fostering a culture of peace to address the following question, from their perspective and experiences:
What does it mean in practice to ‘rediscover solidarity’?
Where is it happening?
