About this Event

[English below]

Un sueño gris con voz de celuloide focuses on the shared research interests between artists Catalina Schliebener Muñoz and Wendy Cabrera Rubio, which includes Walt Disney's involvement in The Good Neighbor Policy through the two Disney films Saludos Amigos (1942) and Los Tres Caballeros (1944). Along with historian Mónica Ramírez Bernal, the group will also open a dialogue on the connections between these films and the histories of the Queens Museum's site, located on the grounds of the 1939-1940 and 1964-1965 New York World's Fairs.

Saludos Amigos and Los Tres Caballeros were distributed during World War II, when the United States sought to strengthen diplomatic ties between the Northern and Southern hemispheres as a countermeasure to the Axis powers’ influence and Nazi propaganda. Both films emerged from Disney’s state-sponsored research trips to South and Central America as part of The Good Neighbor Policy, which sought to improve the United States’ public image in Latin America following numerous occupations and military invasions throughout the early 20th century.

Disney and his team of animators toured Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, and Mexico to generate visual motifs and storylines for recognizable characters like Donald Duck and Goofy, as well as the creation of new characters, songs, and dances based on local customs and archetypes. In their work, Schliebener Muñoz and Cabrera Rubio, incorporate Disney’s particular vision of artesanias (or craftsmanship), customs, and traditions, making a critical commentary on the Pan-American project's role in shaping cultural stereotypes for both local and international publics.

This public program will begin with a tour of Catalina Schliebener Muñoz’s exhibition in the Queens Museum’s galleries and a performance by Wendy Cabrera Rubio in the second floor theater space. The artists’ presentations will be followed by a conversation together with historian Mónica Ramírez Bernal.

Un sueño gris con voz de celuloide will be conducted in Spanish, with simultaneous interpretation to English.
