What to expect on the hike:
Umstead Park provides a beautiful natural setting of forested hills with well-maintained trails. Once you leave the trailhead, you are 'in the woods,' and the only signs of civilization will be the trail markers and the footbridges that cross the many creeks and streams along the route.
The Park guide lists all of the trails for our event as 'moderate,' meaning it will be more vigorous than a troll down a dirt road, but not so difficult as to require any gear other than a sturdy pair of shoes and a water bottle/hydration pack. A daypack and trekking poles may be helpful.
An aid station will be established along the longer route, however you should still carry your own water and preferred snacks. Regardless, hikers will never be more than 4 miles from any parking lot and rangers patrol the entire state park. Hikers should choose a distance that is both challenging and obtainable - no experience required!
What to bring with you:
Hikers will carry all necessary items with them on the hike, which may include bug spray, sunscreen, EPIpen or other medications, water, snacks, socks, etc.
