About this Event
Umbrellas May Not Be Used in Battle: Victorian and Edwardian Dress and Customs
This is a richly illustrated talk on Victorian and Edwardian clothing and customs for fashionable men and women on both sides of the Atlantic. Diaries, journals, and etiquette guides will supplement period imagery to offer a fascinating insight into High Society, from the Duke of Wellington to the Astors and the Vanderbilts — a time when rules of dress of the sort that we use now only at weddings were understood and followed in all areas of upper- and middle-class life.
Caroline Goldthorpe’s love of costumes led her to become a volunteer at the Victoria and Albert Museum at age 15. She subsequently served as a curator at prestigious institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Now a part-time Santa Fean, she currently directs Northwestern University’s Museum Studies Program.
