Ululations and Gurgles of the Invisible
About this Event
Ululations and Gurgles of the Invisible
Guerilla Opera and Urban Jazz Dance Company present Ululations and Gurgles of the Invisible, a boundary-breaking chamber opera composed by Elisabet Curbelo, Associate Professor of Electroacoustic Composition at the Univeristy of Utah, and inspired by Federico García Lorca’s evocative poetry.
This surrealist, interdisciplinary work blends opera, dance, and technology—uniting a soprano, pianist, percussionist, and a diverse ensemble of Deaf dancers who deliver the narrative in American Sign Language (ASL). Through innovative motion-sensor technology that unites gesture to sound, all performers—including instrumentalists—sign while playing, drawing audiences into a multisensory landscape where questions of self identity, self expression and transcendance are explored through movement, music, and visual narrative.
Choreographed by founder of Deaf-led San Francisco based Urban Jazz Dance Company Antoine Hunter, the cast includes Boston-based Guerilla Opera Ensemble members Angela Yam, Yoko Hagino, Mike Williams, and dancers from Urban Jazz Dance Company.
