Pianist and author Dr. Taras Filenko will present a Lecture/Performance on the importance of music to Ukraine’s cultural resilience and survival. Over centuries, Ukrainian musical culture has raised a critical bulwark against the annihilation of Ukrainian history, as well as providing a focus for cultural identification and resistance to subjugation. In performance, Dr. Filenko will play piano works by Ukrainian composers from the 18th to the 21st century, highlighting the richness of this nation’s musical expression. Many of Ukraine’s composers, despite the high quality of their work, are not well known, or they have been appropriated as part of a colonial power. This presentation, accompanied by commentary and visual images, will shed light on this extraordinary musical history.
