Join instructor Bozena Hrycyna from Kosa for an introductory embroidery workshop.
This “Get Crafty!” session will focus on freeform embroidery inspired by traditional Ukrainian ritual cloths, known as “rushnyky,” from the Poltava region.
Embroidery is one of the oldest forms of human expression, allowing us to adorn ourselves and our surroundings. This craft dates back at least 30,000 years! Begin your journey into this rich and ancient art form by learning the basics of embroidery.
You will learn essential embroidery skills and techniques, including stitches such as stem stitch, split stitch, chain stitch, and satin stitch. These stitches are perfect for illustrating organic forms found in nature, such as flowers, birds, and vines. We will explore traditional motifs, including the ‘tree of life’ and its variation, ‘flowers in a vase,’ which are commonly found on rushnyky from central Ukraine.
You will have access to beautiful designs and fabrics to work with. Your finished piece can serve as a patch, form the basis for a small prayer flag, pouch, or book cover, or be incorporated into a larger project or garment later on.
