About this Event
This three-hour workshop introduces participants to the vibrant and symbolic art of Ukrainian Easter eggs, known as Pysankas. Rooted in ancient traditions celebrating rebirth in nature and life—especially the arrival of spring—Pysankas are intricate works of art layered with meaning and intention.
The workshop begins with a short, informative DVD about the history and symbolism of Pysankas. Students then learn the traditional wax-resist method, using beeswax, candlelight, and vibrant dyes to build layered designs. Wax is applied with a traditional tool made of wood and copper called a kistka, allowing for detailed surface patterns rich with symbolism.
Participants will create their own Pysanka in this time-honored Ukrainian tradition, exploring free-form design while incorporating symbols that tell a personal story and carry specific meaning. Each finished egg becomes a symbolic piece of art intended to invoke renewal and a new world vision.
Important Notes:
- Student hands must be free of hand lotion or cream.
- Each student must purchase a $25 Pysanka Egg Decorating Kit directly from the instructor at the start of class. The kit includes all necessary materials to complete the egg.
No prior experience required.
