The war in Ukraine continues to rage, yet the country’s internal political dynamics remain an open question.SIGN UP HERE: https://nupinytt.wufoo.com/forms/mys3cyd1gu6xzk/
Three and a half years after the full-scale Russian invasion, fighting still continues in Ukraine. It remains unclear how the war will end and whether any party will be able to achieve a decisive military victory.
Most commentary and analysis of the war has focused on the policies of Russia on the one hand and Western countries on the other. Ukraine, meanwhile, is presented as united in defense against the aggressor. Little attention is paid to political dynamics within the country.
In this seminar, Volodymyr Ishchenko will analyse the conflicts and contradictions of contemporary Ukrainian politics. Focusing especially on the period since the Euro-Maidan in 2014, he assesses the country’s political development in the light of the transformations of Ukrainian society since the breakdown of the Soviet Union.
Volodymyr Ishchenko is a Ukrainian sociologist. He is currently a research associate at the Institute of East European Studies, Freie Universität, Berlin. Before moving to Germany, he taught sociology at the University of Kyiv. His research focuses on social movements, revolutions, radicalization, right and left politics, nationalism, and civil society. He is the author of Towards the Abyss: Ukraine from Maidan to War, London, Verso, 2024.
