Filmed play trailer:
CBC Radio calls Nawrocki’s play, “An important story to tell and to remember;” Montreal’s Westmount Magazine says it’s, “Compelling and moving.” RUN NAWROCKI RUN! ESCAPE FROM BANFF PRISON, was written, performed and produced by Nawrocki and filmed by Montreal cineaste Naomi Silver-Vézina. It brings to light the incarceration of Ukrainian-Canadian immigrants during WW1, a shameful but not widely known true event in Canadian history. Like today, Canada had invited Ukrainians to live and work here, but when WW1 began, declared them enemy aliens and imprisoned thousands, forcing them to do slave labour under intolerable conditions. “Given the recent influx of displaced Ukrainians to Canada, including Victoria, the play is timely. We must learn from history to never repeat other human rights violations of immigrants and refugees,” says Nawrocki.
Of Ukrainian-Polish heritage, Nawrocki had distant relatives imprisoned in the camps. “The play,” he says “also sheds light on that smoldering spirit of rebellion in each of us to help find the courage to escape any horrible situation.”
A veteran of Montreal’s underground music scene, Nawrocki also has an international reputation. He’s played venues as renowned as Krakow’s Piwnica Pod Baranami, the Rome Book Fair, and New York’s Knitting Factory, solo and with his many bands. With his treated violin he creates work that ranges from new East European folk to post-everything experimental. His discography: 69 albums. A multi-disciplinary performer, he has given thousands of shows of his socially engaged theatre, music and spoken word worldwide. He is the author of seventeen books of poetry, short stories, two novels and two novellas. He has family in Ukraine and has organized and performed at benefits for Ukrainian humanitarian aid across Canada. In Victoria he'll play looped, sampled violin with beats.
His last book, Vancouvered Out (Les Pages Noires, 2024), was praised by The Vancouver Sun as “In the honoured tradition of George Orwell’s Down and Out in Paris and London, highly recommended.” Former Toronto Star Theatre critic, Susan Walker called his last play, Marusya Nikiforova: Ukraine’s Legendary Anarchist Warrior, “A stirring, succinct, one-hander under Nawrocki’s spirited direction.” His last album was The Nawrockis / BORSCHT with his sister Vivian. The Nawrockis did the soundtrack for the film. Vivian also appears in it.
