We’re thrilled to invite you to a hands-on journey into a Ukrainian tradition of beadweaving, where you’ll create your own sylianka, a beautiful beaded necklace rich with history and meaning.
The sylianka (or gerdan) is a symbol of identity and heritage. Appearing in Ukraine in the late 18th century, it was first worn by men as a sign of status — the more intricate and ornate the design, the greater the prestige. Later, women adopted their own delicate versions, weaving narrow beaded ribbons to adorn the neck or head.
Wearing a sylianka or gerdan today connects you to centuries of Ukraine’s craftsmanship traditions—and even to Ukrainian cultural icons like Lesya Ukrainka, who often wore gerdans herself.
This workshop will be guided by our long-time volunteer Dariia, who has been masterfully making syliankas for many years. She will show you how to:
🔹 Learn to read patterns and design your own sylianka
🔹 Choose beads for each necklace
🔹 Master traditional beadwork techniques — from starting and adding threads to finishing and making clasps or ties
No previous experience needed!
By the end of the session, you’ll begin crafting your very own handmade sylianka and gain the skills to continue creating them on your own. Beadweaving is not only about beauty, but also about peace of mind. Usually, the process takes a long time, but it also has a real therapeutic effect.

Запрошуємо вас на майстер-клас із плетіння силянок!
Силянка (або ґердан) — це символ української ідентичності та спадщини. В Україні вона з’явилася наприкінці XVIII століття й спершу була чоловічою прикрасою — чим складніший і багатший орнамент, тим вищий статус власника. Згодом жінки почали створювати власні, більш тендітні варіанти — вузенькі стрічки з бісеру, які носили на шиї або вплітали у волосся.
Сьогодні, надягаючи силянку чи ґердан, ми продовжуємо традицію українських майстринь і торкаємося культурної спадщини, яку носили такі постаті, як Леся Українка, відома своєю любов’ю до ґерданів.
Цей майстер-клас проведе наша волонтерка Дарія, яка вже багато років майстерно виготовляє силянки. Вона покаже як:
🔹 читати схеми й створювати власний орнамент;
🔹 добирати бісер для кожного виробу;
🔹 опановувати традиційні техніки плетіння — як починати, додавати нову нитку, завершувати та робити застібки чи зав’язки.
Попередній досвід не потрібний!
Наприкінці заняття ви розпочнете створювати власну силянку й отримаєте всі навички, щоби далі продовжувати самостійно. Плетіння — це не лише про красу, а й про спокій. Як правило, процес займає довгий час, але натомість має справжній терапевтичний ефект.
