About this Event
Students Rise Up is a national campaign of students and workers across the country organizing protests against Trump and authoritarianism on their campuses the first Friday of each month, leading to a national day of walkouts and strikes on Friday, May 1.
UIC student organizations and educator and faculty unions formed a coalition and have taken up UIC Rise Up as vehicle for the movement needed to fight back against attacks on workers, students, and all those who are marginalized by UIC’s capitulation to Trump. Join us for a town hall on January 27th in SCE room 605!
OUR DEMANDS
Security
- UIC campus must be a sanctuary zone, ICE is not allowed on our campus.
- We demand an emergency alert system for external law enforcement.
- We demand UIC provide KYR trainings for students, faculty, staff.
Affordability
- We demand all workers on campus be paid a living wage. Chancellor Miranda makes almost a million a year as grad students make half the living wage in Chicago.
- We demand real healthcare for graduate students. Working while sick is a public health hazard for the whole campus community. Graduate workers shouldn’t have to choose between medical debt and public health.
Accountability
- The Board of Trustees refuses to allow public comment and oversight at their meetings. UIC students and workers deserve to be heard!
- We demand an end to the Open Expressions policy! Everyone on campus should be able to organize freely.
Education
- Better supported educators means better classes.
- We demand 12 month contracts to ensure workers can focus on their studies.
- We demand UIC fund our cultural centers!
