Tiffany Ng presents “To The Sun,” a participatory sound installation that invites all audience members to join the carillon in an ensemble performance that sonifies data collected by NASA’s Parker Solar Probe (PSP), the fastest human-made object ever, traveling at 430,000 mph, and the first spacecraft to fly through the sun’s corona—a daring mission to understand solar winds and space weather that impact Earth. Participants will use a web-based smartphone app to accompany the carillon in a group musical performance that explores solar data collected by PSP, bringing science to life and highlighting the creative possibilities of open data initiatives.“To The Sun” was co-developed by Greg Niemeyer, Chris Chafe, Chelle Gentemann, Tiffany Ng, William Wu, and Faye Held. The 10-minute participatory event will be bookended by carillon repertoire exploring themes of the sun and of telling time, as clock towers do.
