O jaguar é um felino da América, de pelo malhado, próximo do leopardo, mas um décimo desta espécie veste um lustroso pelo negro, tornando-o num animal noturno, perigoso e misterioso. É fácil criarmos narrativas que liguem este lindíssimo predador ao universo de Tó Trips, um músico essencial da música portuguesa das últimas décadas mas que tem preferido habitar a sombra e cultivar um certo anonimato ficcionado. Basta lembrarmo-nos como aparecia nos Dead Combo, mais empenhado em construir uma silhueta que um retrato. Pelo meio dessa aventura com Pedro Gonçalves, o seu lado mais jaguar, a solo, foi com Guitarra 66, de 2009, e Guitarra Makaka, de 2015, que nos foi musicando a sua autobiografia mais transparente. Oito anos depois, Tó Trips sai da sombra e abocanha-nos em 2023 com o seu novo disco, feito de histórias recentes e antigas para guitarra, gravadas meticulosamente, ao longo dos últimos três anos, também com a companhia de António Quintino e Helena Espvall, que se juntam em palco na Culturgest como uma popular alcateia.

Native to the Americas, the jaguar is a cat that shares several features with the leopard, among them the distinctive spots. With a lustrous black coat, a rough tenth of the species are nocturnal, mysterious, dangerous creatures. It comes naturally to link these magnificent predators to the creative universe of Tó Trips, a key figure in Portuguese music throughout the last few decades, even if he consistently remains in the shadow, investing his persona with an anonymous aura instead. You need only recall the project Dead Combo, where Trips existed as silhouette rather than fully-fledged band member. Amidst the Combo adventure with Pedro Gonçalves, Trips was at his most ‘jaguar’ in his solo work – first came Guitarra 66 in 2009, then Guitarra Makaka in 2015, two albums in which he gave us his most visible musical autobiography yet. Eight years later, Trips leaps from the shadows to take a ravishing bite out of our minds with his 2023 offering, a set of old and new stories for guitar studiously recorded for the last three years with António Quintino and Helena Espvall. The trio – or is it a prowl? – will now take the stage at Culturgest.
