Amapola Gallery presents “Two Rare Birds,” the wood carvings of Ray Upson and multiple mediums by Sally Rugala, Featured Artists for May.
Ray Upson is one of those increasingly rare birds, an Albuquerquean who was actually born and raised in Albuquerque. From guardian angels to barflies, quintessential cowboys to sly Santas, each distinctive wood carving displays Ray’s quirky sense of humor. Ray worked in the retail lumber business for nearly 40 years and he knows his wood. He uses basswood and butternut from Wisconsin, Spanish cedar and aspen from New Mexico, colorful paints, and a whole lot of creative imagination to fashion these charming collectibles.
Sally Rugala is a rare bird indeed. Child of parents with medical backgrounds, she jumped full force into fine arts—after years working as a computer scientist. (She’ll tell you it’s all about creative solutions.) Her range is enormous, from nature photography to stylized acrylic landscapes to “pours,” pure abstract bursts of color and motion. A second or third look at these may subtlety reveal a swimming salmon or maybe a dragon. Sally has a line of earrings and pendants made of tiny paintings and painting remnants.
Focus on both these rare birds and their art at the First Friday reception May 3 from 1 to 5 p.m.
The “Two Rare Birds” exhibit runs through May at Amapola Gallery.
