Twisted Spine Presents: A New Wave of Horror

Join OF Cieri , Saskia Nislow, Sasha Ravitch, and M Jane Worma as they discuss B.R Yeager's definition of "the New Wave of Horror" as described in the October 2025 issue of The Southwest Review - genre fiction that is not contained within genre expectations. There are frequently no non-human villains, but the ones that do exist feature a more modernist cosmic force instead of a monster, or even a human monster such as a witch or vampire.

About the Speakers:

OF Cieri is based out of NYC. In 2013 she won first place in BMCC's Poetry Competition. In 2016 she won an Honourable Mention in LaborArts Make Work Visible Competition. Her non fiction has been carried by Hyperallergic and the Invisible Oranges. She published her first book, Lord of Thundertown, with Ninestar Press in 2020. In February of 2023 she published her second book, Lockdown Laureate, with Castaigne Publishing. Her third book, Backmask, was published by Malarkey in June of 2023.

Saskia Nislow is a writer, ceramicist, and psychoanalytic training candidate based in Brooklyn, where they live with their partner and three cats. You can find Saskia at saskianislow.com or @cronebro on Instagram.

Sasha Ravitch (she/her) consults, presents and teaches on, and writes fiction, theory, and creative non-fiction about the gothic imagination and monster theory. With a forthcoming manuscript with Revelore Press, she’s published by Strange Horizons, Cosmic Horror Monthly, ergot., and more. She attended Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity’s Writer’s Residency, is EIC for antilogos press, and is finishing her MFA at Sarah Lawrence College, where she’s genre editor for Lumina. Her current research is tracing what she coined the "eschatological gothic" in Berlin, NYC, and London’s post-punk/no-wave scene, and reading creative subcultural figureheads and fashion as literary text.

M. Jane Worma is a horror obsessed queer with a BA in creative writing from a place that no longer exists. They hail from the southwest and is steadily infecting Brooklyn. Their debut novella, OF BEASTS, was released by Clash Books 2026.
