About The genesis of the musical
Expect the Unexpected was born in 2020, during the COVID era and the lockdowns.
From 2021 to 2025, the musical’s story, characters, and songs were written entirely online through recurring Zoom calls.
The work was led by three music artists based in three different countries who had never met in person.
Instead of letting distance and isolation stop them, they turned that time into something meaningful: building a real connection, and creating together across miles.
Three years after they first began collaborating online, they finally met face-to-face in Los Angeles in 2003, travelling respectively from Canada, Australia, and Scotland.
That meeting marked the beginning of creating on-the-ground content to bring the musical to life.
It was love at first sight for Marina and Johnathan. They fell in love, married in 2005, and performed their wedding dance to “Infinite,” one of the musical’s most iconic love songs.
Expect the unexpected
- Marina Bennett : We want our musical to unite the world and remind everyone that there's magic in the ordinary moments, and in the extraordinary ones too. We hope it brings joy and inspiration and magic back to a world that's been dark and chaotic. We want to spread the love and beauty and hope.
- Rachelle Rhienne : It’s more than a musical - it's a wake-up call to the soul. In a world full of constant stimulation and uncertainty, Expect the Unexpected is a portal into a whole new dimension, where genre-bending, heart-opening songs and powerful storytelling reignite your imagination, and connect you back to what truly matters.
- is an original cinematic pop musical that is on a epic journey to the top, to the Broadway stage in New York. We are hoping that we can gather support from people at this early stage and build hype online in order to get our project in front of the right eyes, build demand and we can all enjoy the experience of making a big dream become a big reality. Rachelle, Marina Jon (3 Sparks) on creating the musical .
- We have had feedback from industry professionals that this is a rare circumstance for just the 3 of us to have written everything ourselves (the music and the script) which makes it really stand out, especially through our story of having written the entire musical on zooms calls on opposite ends of the world.
- We wrote the majority of the songs between 2020-2022 and later wrote the script during the Summer of 2025. Having created an audiobook workshop for promotional and pitching purposes, we now hope to build a live stage workshop for the near future as we develop the musical's presence and brand.
A word for Belfast, Dublin danceres and other cities in England, Wales, Scotland who will welcome these workshops and perform these fan-made choreos
Rachelle Rhienne : Have fun, be yourself and don't be afraid to step out your comfort zones. "Expect the Unexpected Musical" and our song "Tuxedo" is all about bringing joy, relatability and feeling lucky to be who you are. We want people to express that with confidence.
Marina Bennett: Thank you so much for using our music in your class! We are beyond thrilled and grateful! And we can't wait to see the choreography of your class with everyone! So exciting! Thank you so much Morgane for taking such a thoughtful creative approach to helping us get the word out about our show! Your dancing is superb!!
