OMI TUTU: COOL WATERS is a 25-minute dance performance by Kimberly Miguel Mullen, M.A., that honors the sacred waters & divine feminine forces of the Yoruba Oricha tradition. This multi-sensory ritual performance is the first movement of a full-length work-in-progress exploring elemental forces, ancestral memory, and embodied spiritual practices of the African Diaspora.
Rooted in over 30-years of research in AfroCaribbean & AfroBrazilian sacred dance, Omi Tutu pays homage to the "las dos aguas" or "the two waters" - Yemaya, the Oricha of the Sea & the divine universal mother & Ochun, the deity of the sweet, fresh waters of love & beauty. The performance features original field recordings from Kimberly's ethnographic field recordings from Santiago de Cuba, layered with prayerful soundscapes by Tah Rei.
Set against a backdrop of breathtaking cinematography by award winning filmmaker Craig Renaud - OMI TUTU creates a living altar where film, sound, and movement converge. Continuing Mullen's lifelong devotion and offering to the sacred waters, the artists invite the audience into a sacred healing space where water becomes a medium for memory, ritual and transformation.
This performance is part of the Tucson Fringe Festival - a multi-day performing arts program showcasing bold voices and multi-disciplinary storytelling.
