COURSE OVERVIEW
Turnaround Scheduling with Primavera P6

A Practical, Field-Based Training for Shutdown & Turnaround Planners

Turnarounds and shutdowns are the most demanding and high-risk events in industrial operations. They compress thousands of activities, massive manpower peaks, and critical safety constraints into a narrow execution window where there is no room for error.

This course provides a practical, real-world approach to planning, building, and controlling turnaround schedules using Primavera P6, based on how shutdowns are actually executed in refineries, petrochemical plants, LNG facilities, and heavy industrial projects.

Unlike generic Primavera training, this course focuses specifically on turnaround and shutdown workflows, including repair lists, work order packages, fragnets, resource loading, leveling, updating, and earned value impacts during execution.

The training is led by Cesar Ramos, Primavera P6 expert and turnaround specialist with over 20 years of hands-on experience supporting real outages and shutdowns across the oil & gas and industrial sectors.

This course is designed for professionals who need to build schedules that survive the field, not just pass a software tutorial.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This course is ideal for:

  • Turnaround planners & schedulers
  • Primavera P6 users supporting shutdowns or outages
  • Project controls professionals
  • Maintenance planners
  • Cost controllers supporting TAs
  • Engineers transitioning into planning & scheduling
  • Anyone responsible for reporting or forecasting turnaround progress

Recommended: Basic familiarity with Primavera P6 (navigation level).

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the full turnaround planning lifecycle
  • Translate repair lists into schedulable work packages
  • Build fragnet-based turnaround schedules in Primavera P6
  • Apply correct resource loading and leveling strategies
  • Avoid common scheduling and logic failures during shutdowns
  • Update and maintain a turnaround schedule during execution
  • Understand how earned value is automatically triggered in P6
  • Communicate realistic forecasts to turnaround leadership

COURSE FORMAT
  • Instructor-led training
  • Real-world examples and field-driven explanations
  • Primavera P6 demonstrations
  • Turnaround-specific workflows (not generic projects)
  • Interactive discussion based on real shutdown scenarios

Delivery Options:
✔ In-person
✔ Live virtual (if applicable)

DETAILED COURSE OUTLINE
MODULE 1 — INTRODUCTION TO TURNAROUNDS & SHUTDOWNS
  • What makes turnarounds different from capital projects
  • Shutdown vs Turnaround vs Outage
  • Typical durations and planning timelines
  • Why most turnarounds fail from a scheduling perspective
  • Roles of planners, schedulers, and project controls during TAs

MODULE 2 — TURNAROUND PLANNING PROCESS
  • Repair list development
  • Work order package fundamentals
  • How scope flows into the schedule
  • Understanding execution constraints
  • Top-down planning and Level 1 roadmaps

MODULE 3 — PRIMAVERA P6 PREPARATION FOR TURNAROUNDS
  • Required P6 settings for shutdown schedules
  • Calendars for shift work and turnaround execution
  • Coding structures and WBS setup
  • Activity ID strategies for large TA schedules

MODULE 4 — FRAGNET DEVELOPMENT
  • What fragnets are and why they are critical for TAs
  • Building repeatable logic templates
  • Applying fragnets to work order scope
  • Avoiding logic gaps and sequencing errors
  • Scaling fragnets across large scopes

MODULE 5 — RESOURCE & BUDGET LOADING
  • Why turnaround schedules must be resource loaded
  • Assigning labor hours correctly
  • Understanding manpower congestion risks
  • Reading and interpreting histograms
  • Aligning schedule manpower with contractor plans

MODULE 6 — RESOURCE LEVELING & BASELINING
  • Proper leveling sequence for turnaround schedules
  • Identifying unrealistic manpower peaks
  • Locking the execution plan
  • Baselining strategy for shutdowns
  • What should (and should not) change after baseline approval

MODULE 7 — UPDATING & MAINTAINING THE SCHEDULE
  • Shift-based and daily updating strategies
  • Actual start/finish rules
  • Duration % complete vs physical % complete
  • ETC options and best practices
  • Avoiding data corruption during execution

MODULE 8 — CHANGE ORDERS & EARNED VALUE IMPACTS
  • Managing scope changes during shutdowns
  • Baseline impacts of change orders
  • Why earned value exists even when you don’t think you’re using it
  • Common EV mistakes in Primavera P6
  • Using remaining values for forecasting

MODULE 9 — LESSONS LEARNED & COMMON FAILURES
  • Constraint misuse
  • Hidden scope and late discoveries
  • Crew congestion failures
  • Poor updating practices
  • How small errors create major delays

WHAT YOU WILL WALK AWAY WITH

✔ A clear understanding of how to plan and schedule real turnarounds
✔ Proven methods for building survivable P6 shutdown schedules
✔ Practical field rules you can apply immediately
✔ A stronger ability to support TA leadership and execution teams
✔ Increased confidence working high-pressure shutdown events
