The Turkey Wing Whisk Broom Workshop teaches students the basics of broom making – using the Tumble Spool, proper knotting technique, glues and cements, and measurement techniques. The class focuses on the traditional Turkey Wing design, but the skills learned provide a good jumping off point for a variety of other styles – Hawk Tails, Rooster Tails, Handled Floor Brooms, and the occasional Halloween or witch’s broom.
In this one-day workshop students will learn the basic techniques used in the creation of all styles of brooms and whisks. We’ll start out with a simple “bundle broom” – just a small whisk broom – that will teach the knots and techniques necessary for a strong broom foundation. We’ll proceed to the more complex Turkey Wing style, an Appalachian design that widens the broom out without adding extra weight. At the end of the day, we’ll create another Turkey Wing and use common basket reed to create a plaited handle. We’ll discuss Twilling Patterns as they relate to broom handles, either for ease of construction or as a decorative element. As an alternative, some students might switch to the more symmetrical Hawk Tail style broom.
Students will go home with two or three brooms of their creation, in their own color scheme using their choices of colored broom corn, reed, and leather hanging straps.
