Turandot at Dubai Opera

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its world premiere, Dubai Opera presents Turandot, the final and most monumental work by Giacomo Puccini, in an authentically Chinese production by the Chinese National Opera House, created for a new international staging.
Set within a stylised, symbolic vision of ancient China, Turandot explores themes of power, fear, sacrifice, and redemption through the figure of Princess Turandot, whose impenetrable resolve is enforced by a ritual of three riddles imposed upon her suitors. The arrival of the exiled Prince Calaf alters the course of this brutal tradition, initiating a dramatic and emotional transformation that culminates in the triumph of love over cruelty.
Puccini’s score stands among the most powerful achievements in the operatic repertoire, uniting lyrical intimacy with monumental choral and orchestral writing. The opera includes some of the most recognisable moments in the canon, including Signore ascolta, In questa reggia, and Nessun dorma, whose expressive force underscores the psychological and dramatic intensity of the work. In the final act, the revelation that resolves the drama affirms Puccini’s enduring humanism and theatrical vision.
This production draws thoughtfully on both Chinese and Italian artistic traditions, integrating visual symbolism, refined costume design, and expansive choral writing with the dramatic architecture of Puccini’s late style. The score, left unfinished at the composer’s death and completed by Franco Alfano for its historic 1926 premiere, is presented here in a staging that reflects a deep respect for its cultural and historical context.
