On behalf of the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner Commemoration Committee I would like to invite you to the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner Commemoration which will be held at the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner monument at midday, Monday 20th January 2025 at the corner of Victoria St and Franklin St, Melbourne.The colonisation of Australia was a brutal affair that continues to have a profound impact on First Nations people, as well as the rest of Australians. This undeclared war was carried out in secret by settler culture that was based on theft, rape and murder. While most indigenous Australians who died in this undeclared war were poisoned, starved, shot on sight, hacked to pieces or victims of germ warfare, Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner were publicly executed in Melbourne on the 20th January 1842 for daring to resist the colonisers.
Tunnerminnerwait, Maulboyheenner, Pyterruner, Truganini and Planobeena where five members of 16 Aborigines that had been selected from the 88 survivors, on Flinders Island, of the three decade long genocidal war in Tasmania, who were brought across to Victoria by George Augustus Robinson to “civilise the Victorian blacks”. Their armed incursions into the Westernport region in Victoria caused consternation among the settlers in Melbourne.
The establishment of a Frontier Wars monument in Melbourne in 2016 not only recognises their ultimate sacrifice, it is also a very small step towards putting together the jigsaw puzzle the 2017 Uluru Statement from the Heart created so reconciliation based on justice, not charity finally becomes a reality.
The Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner Commemoration Committee believes your participation in this ceremony would help to kick start the stalled reconciliation process between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.
JOIN US Monday 20th January 2025 from midday for the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner Commemoration which will be held at the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner monument - corner of Victoria St and Franklin St, Melbourne.
Then, after the commemoration JOIN US as we silently walk from the execution site to their last resting place at the eastern end of the northern wall that divides Melbourne's Queen Victoria Markets, to acknowledge their just struggle (please bring flowers).
The first hour of the Commemoration will be broadcast live on 3CR Community Radio – 855 on the AM dial and streaming live on www.3cr.org.au
The microphone will be opened to the people attending the commemoration to air their views after the guest speakers have spoken.
