About this Event
Immerse yourself in the mangroves at this interdisciplinary afternoon of sound, sight and environmental science.
Experience acoustic recordings from the incredible mangrove forests of the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary in Bli Bli. Time-lapse footage will take you underwater in this unique intertidal habitat and an immersive audio-visual presentation by USC design graduates will bring the Maroochy River system to the Univeristy of the Sunshine Coast in the 320 degree CAVE2 auditorium. Creative design presentations by: Bernice Wood and Josie Bennett
An expert panel will traverse the importance of mangrove ecosystems, current and ongoing research being undertaken by the Sunshine Coast Council and partners, the role of citizen science and community knowledge in a changing environment, and the importance of environmental data and monitoring with innovative tools, such as acoustic ecology.
Speakers:
- Dr Leah Barclay - Senior Lecturer in Design at UniSC (award-winning acoustic artist and researcher, soundscapes for ecological conservation)
- Dr Lana Baskerville - independent environmental scientist, illustrator and communicator (focusing on coastal and freshwater wetlands and the Great Barrier Reef)
- Kieren Aland - Ecologist at Wild Wise (whose work includes research on water mouse and Eastern ground parrot populations)
- Stephanie Reif - Conservation Officer Sunshine Coast Council (undertaking monitoring projects and leading citizen science initiatives at Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary).
This event will be held on 26th July, in celebration of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.
