20th Century Song: Tuesdays at Six welcomes soprano Bonnie Lander for a program of modern music for voice
About this Event

A specialist in modern and avant-garde vocal techniques, Dr. Bonnie Lander presents a captivating program of 20th century music for the voice including excerpts from Kafka Fragments (1986) by György Kurtág, Olivier Messiaen’s monumental song cycle Harawi (1945), and solo vocal works by Giacinto Scelsi and Alvin Lucier. At times mesmerizing, at times pushing the boundaries of what the human voice can do, this not-to-be-missed program also features San Diego-based violinist Batya Macadam-Somer and Emmanuel’s Director of Music Christian Lane.

  • Bonnie Lander, soprano
  • Batya Macadam-Somer, violin
  • Christian Lane, piano

Arrive early for a complimentary welcome reception, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

About the venue

Emmanuel Episcopal Church is located in the heart of Baltimore's historic Mt. Vernon neighborhood. Its tremendous stone tower at the corner of Cathedral and W Read Streets serves as a beacon in this community, and the nave's warm acoustic and gentle ambiance contribute to creating an ideal environment in which to hear choral and chamber music.

In 2022, the church building undergoes a $2.8M transformation to make each space in its physical plant fully accessible to all; included in this project is an elevator, increased ramp access, and new restroom facilities. Please note that, until construction concludes in early 2023, the building currently has a reduced number of restrooms; additionally, access to both the performance space and existing restroom facilities requires navigation of some stairs.

Parking and Transportation

Paid parking is available in a lot directly adjacent to Emmanuel Church, with entrances on both N Charles and W Read Streets. More information about rates and location may be found here.

Numerous options for metered street parking, free street parking, and alternative parking lots may be found on the city blocks surrounding Emmanuel's building at 811 Cathedral Street.

The church is also served by local bus routes on both Cathedral and N Charles Streets, as well as the Charm City Circulator (Purple Route) and Baltimore LiteRail Link (Mt Vernon/Centre St Stop).
