If you've never done a criterium, here's the quick version: it's a mass-start race on a closed circuit, usually run for a set time or number of laps. You're jockeying for position with other riders, learning pack dynamics, testing your legs. It's intense and fun. That's where crits shine. They're short enough to be accessible but tactical enough to keep you sharp.
We're teaming up with Omaha Velo to bring back Tuesday Night Worlds! It is a series of five criteriums starting June 30. Every Tuesday through July 28, except July 14, racing kicks off at 6pm in Baxter Arena's parking lot (UNO Parking Lot #26).
New to criteriums? Come learn with us. We're hosting a clinic with the beginners on race day so you can get comfortable with the format before you race. They will focus on the following skills: Basic Pack Skills: Protecting Your Front Wheel, Cornering: Choosing and Holding Your Line, Pack Awareness & Skills, Sprinting Basics, Bringing it All Together. These are meant to give you the confidence to move onto the CAT IV race.
The schedule is:
Beginners Race (CAT V) - 6:00 PM - This will cover training and a shorter race. All bikes are welcome, however a road bike is preferred. 20 Minutes
Womens Open (CAT 1-V) - 6:30 PM - This is an open Women Race - limited by request to 20 minutes.
Sport Race (CAT 3-4) - 7:00 PM - This is the open race. A great place to practice the skills and race. The field is pretty open here and a variety of skills are on display! 40 min Race
Elite Race (CAT 1-2) - 7:50 PM - This is the home of high speed action! We've got something for everyone: women's and beginner races run 20 minutes, the sport race goes 40, and elite riders have 50 minutes to settle it.
These are USA Cycling Sanctioned Events and a USA Cycling number is required, and are available race day. Each event cost $15
Use these weeks to build skills and fitness, then bring what you've learned to the two larger races hosted by the Omaha Sports Commission, the "Aksarben TIRC" and "Papillion Twilight Crits", national level criteriums in the first weekend in August.
