Want to have fun, grow in confidence, unleash your creativity - and make new friends as well? Then look no further - our Improv Course for Beginners will become the highlight of your week!

Improv boosts your confidence. It's fun to learn and practice. It's creative, sociable, surprising, playful, empowering, meaningful, and transformational. At Beginners, we teach the underpinning and transferable skills of improv in a safe and supportive environment for a small group of 12 participants. Our classes are full of life-long learning and laughter. You don't need any performance, theatre, or comedy experience to join Beginners at all. We have a really friendly and welcoming community here. People come from all walks of life. Any early nerves will soon fly!

It's like a playground for adults. As the course progresses, you’ll play theatrical-style games and take part in short improvised scenes. You’ll learn how to ‘Accept and Build’ on each other’s ideas, the ‘Who What Where’ that makes up the start and context of storytelling, the way ‘Status’ and body language affect you and others, and how risk-taking and a positive response to making mistakes leads to creativity. You'll learn the guiding principles of improv, acquire a set of tools and techniques, and develop the underpinning skills that enable you to be in the moment and connect and collaborate with others creatively.
You’ll emerge with a solid foundation in the FUNdamentals of Improv, and if you really love it, then if you want to continue, the next level up is Improvers, where you’ll love improvising even more, and we provide plenty of performance opportunities too.
You’re in safe hands. School of Improv is longest running learning and participation programme of its kind in the UK (est 2003) and led by Bev Fox and Ian McLaughlin (our founder artistic directors) - two of the most accomplished improv teachers in the country. Their award-winning career spans over 30 years on stage, film, TV, and radio. They are founders of Boho Arts, School of Improv, The Suggestibles, and the Newcastle Improv Festival. They trained with ‘Impro’ author and grandmaster, Keith Johnstone, and amongst many other great companies worked with the renowned Improbable Theatre and The Comedy Store Players in London.
