About this Event
Join expert ceramic conservationist Amy Douglas for a fascinating workshop on Japanese ceramic repair technique, Kintsugi.
Amy’s taster workshop, in the style of Kintsugi, will demonstrate beginner level skills for bonding a broken plate using accessible materials, filling the break edges and then gilding the fill with a beautiful shiny repair (just to note: true Kintsugi technique would take days and days, hence this is ‘in the style of’). A beautiful way to fix your favourite china.
Amy will also demonstrate how to gild a shell or walnut (great ideas for Christmas hanging decorations, or for your Christmas wreath?).
On the day, please bring: Broken plates (with small missing pieces are better).
Kintsugi honours the ‘perfect imperfect’, and is closely connected to the Japanese concept of Wabi Sabi where ‘less is more’, referring to an awareness of the transient nature of earthly things and a corresponding pleasure in the things that bear the mark of this impermanence.
Amy Douglas currently works in Brighton and has worked in ceramic conservation for over 15 years. She is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. Amy studied Decorative Arts at the City & Guilds of London Art School where she learnt to gild using traditional techniques.
Cost: £125, to include vegetarian lunch and refreshments through out the day
