About this Event
In tribute to Desmond Tutu's legacy of scholarly reflection and contemplation, York Minster Desmond Tutu Centre for Religion and Social Justice at the University of Western Cape (UWC), and United Society Partners in the Gospel (USPG) have established an annual Desmond Tutu Memorial Lecture on Religion and Social Justice.
The primary aim of the Desmond Tutu Annual Memorial Lecture is to provide a forum for critical reflection on the intersection of religion and social justice. Join us as we draw upon scholarly perspectives, particularly from Africa and the global majority world, to deepen comprehension and inspire action toward dismantling oppressive structures and nurturing just communities.
The speaker for the Inaugural lecture, to be held at York Minster, will be The Rev.d Nontombi Tutu - an Anglican priest and human rights advocate who is the daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
All are welcome to attend this free event.
About The Revd Naomi Nontombi Tutu
Naomi is an Episcopal priest who is a priest associate at All Saint's Episcopal, Atlanta. The challenges of growing up black and female in apartheid South Africa have been the foundation of Naomiโs life as an activist for human rights. The Revd Tutu is the third child of Archbishop Desmond and Nomalizo Leah Tutu.
Prior to her call to ministry, her professional experience ranged from being a development consultant in West Africa to being a programme coordinator for programmes on Race and Gender and Gender-based Violence in Education at the African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town. In addition, The Revd Tutu has taught at the University of Hartford, the University of Connecticut and Brevard College in North Carolina. She served as Programme Coordinator for the historic Race Relations Institute at Fisk University and was a part of the Instituteโs delegation to the World Conference Against Racism in Durban.
She started her public speaking as a college student at Berea College in Kentucky in the 1970โs when she was invited to speak at churches, community groups and colleges and universities about her experiences growing up in apartheid South Africa. Since that time, she has become a much sought-after speaker to groups as varied as business associations, professional conferences, elected officials and church and civic organizations.
