The Trundle Lecture in Ancient History given by Prof Franco De Angelis of the University of British Columbia

The Trundle Lecture for 2026 will be given by the distinguished Ancient Historian Professor Franco De Angelis of the University of British Columbia. His lecture will re-examine how we think of the Ancient Mediterranean as either a connected place or a collection of places by looking at indigeneity in the Ancient Mediterranean as a means of explaining Rome’s rise to power over its contemporary competitors.

This lecture is open to the public and will be of interest to all those fascinated by the history of the Ancient Mediterranean. Professor De Angelis is a world-leading scholar of Ancient Sicily in particular and how the Greeks moved throughout the Ancient Mediterranean more generally, and will be visiting us from Vancouver, Canada.

Professional Bio: Franco De Angelis is Full Professor and Distinguished University Scholar at the University of British Columbia. As a teacher and researcher, he has developed cross-cultural, interdisciplinary methodologies that employ all types of evidence and various theoretical tools. His research focuses on expanding the narrow story traditionally told about the ancient Greeks by addressing their overlooked migrations, especially to Italy. He has held research fellowships at the British School at Rome, the University of Munich (through the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation), the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies, the Institute for Classical Studies (University of London), the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, and the German Archaeological Institute Rome. His books include Archaic and Classical Sicily: A Social and Economic History and A Companion to Greeks Across the Ancient World.

This lecture series commemorates the life and legacy of Prof. Matthew Trundle (1965-2019), and was funded by generous donations from his friends, colleagues, and former students, as well as by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Auckland.
